Travel Kit

13/11/2013

So, I finally have my travel kit together. The requirements were:
  1. Fits in my laptop bag
  2. Allround lens(es) for urban/landscape/portrait pictures
  3. Camera does well in low light
  4. Off camera flash
  5. Inexpensive (!!!) so that I wouldn't be financially destroyed if something breaks or gets lost/stolen

Here it is:
Picture
  • Canon EOS M with 22mm 2.0 pancake lens (translates to approx 35mm due to the crop sensor, so I have the "normal" focal length with me and can vary from up-close portraits to landscapes)
  • Canon Speedlite 90EX (was in a bundle with the camera, can be used as on-camera fill flash or as a master flash if needed)
  • Yongnuo RF-603 flash transceiver (syncs at up to 1/250 with the two YN560-III flashes)
  • 2x Yongnuo YN560-III flashes (manually adjustable down to 1/128 power and have a strobe function which can be set variably allowing you to take a long exposure with multiple flashes)
  • rosco Strobist collection gels
  • Canon RC-1 remote shutter release (infrared)
  • Gorillapod
  • 2x diffuser hoods for the flashes
I haven't listed any pricing (go check on da Internetz) but I am super happy with value for money from all of these items. I have already sung the praises of the EOS M which I absolutely love, so let me say now that these two Yongnuo flashes are great. They feel sturdy and ready for action, have a bunch of nifty functions and built-in radio receivers which make them extremely cool for a very small price. Of course they don't compare to my Canon 600EXs, but since I really don't want to take my expensive flashes with me all over the World, the Yongnuos are a great investment (and a small fraction of the cost of the Canons).

So: on trips where photography is not the primary goal, this is what I'll have with me. And I'm thinking of carrying it around in my laptop bag pretty much all the time as well so if you run into me and want your picture taken... just ask nicely!

Interesting kit. I am trying to sort out what to take on a 5 week R-T-W trip in Oct. I love the 22, but also like the kit zoom and the WA zoom. I've got most of this on hand (older nikon flashes with triggers/receivers). Do you really find yourself using both flashes much while traveling?

Actually I do tend to use both, mostly in a key / hairlight combination. But it also gives me the versatility of doing some funky stuff so I often have both set up somewhere or ask friends (or even passing strangers) to hold them.

I really stick with the one lens - it makes me think a lot more about what to do. Also, it massively cuts down space and weight needed.

Also, here's the post about the first set of pictures I took with the 2 flash setup: http://www.photographybysherv.com/blog/ad-hoc-portraits-in-melbourne
