This Is Riot Promoshoot
Just a few samples of the quick shoot I had with This Is Riot - a Pantera cover / tribute band which developed out of the 2012 Dimebash and will be playing at the 2013 Dimebash at ((szene)).
Dropzity Releaseshow @ p.p.c. Graz
Dropzity were showing off their new album in Graz and I drove down to shoot the show - got to see my friends from Leon's Massacre again and witnessed Parkbench Drive as another opener. Dropzity blew everyone away with a great set! Difficult show to shoot with only LED lighting in use...
Loxodrome Releaseshow @ Bauhof Pettenbach
Drove over to Pettenbach (which is a relatively small town in Upper Austria) to see Loxodrome release their new album "Mirrors". Spent the day with them, doing some promo (outtakes below) in the afternoon and then shooting them, Ryotts and Naca7 in the evening.
All Austrian Metal Night @ Viper Room
#9 of this event series had me back in the Viper Room shooting three great bands. Camp Chaos set up and I suspected to hear core of some sort when I saw their singer but it was pure death metal all the way. Veterans Days of Loss played a solid set and followed up superbly. Finally, a huge change in style brought one of my favourite bands onto the stage: Unavoidable showed that even with a low ceiling jumping is a possibility!

Sonic Heartbreak Festival @ ((szene))
This year's Sonic Heartbreak Festival saw me working another photocorner after last year's success. The bands that played were all awesome and I got sets of Cake Break, Reverend Backflash and Surfaholics!
Biohazard @ ((szene))
I was planning to see Biohazard and was surprised to find out a day earlier that my friend Boris would be playing with Only Attitude Counts as one of the openers. Also great to see him wearing a luchador mask!
Anthrax @ Kulturfabrik Kufstein
Anthrax are one of my absolute favourite bands, definitely joint #1 in my esteem with a few others. I was stoked when my friend Jon said he'd be playing with them again and I should come to the show! On one of the hottest days they played a small club which heated up to about 45 degrees...
Deep Purple @ Burg Clam
Running Order: Sergeant Steel, Deep Purple
Deep Purple was an absolute "must-see" for me and they didn't disappoint. Great stage presence, a long set and loads of solos, mixing their rock and blues stuff throughout - and really showing why they are one of the biggest inspirations for all the metal that I have listened to over the years!

Dog Eat Dog @ ((szene))
Running Order: No Silence For Sale, Time For Pride, Dog Eat Dog
DOG EAT DOG! Need I say more? What a great warmup show for their upcoming series of gigs! And everyone loved it! So nice to see an old-school mosh and circle pit with only fun and no aggression! And what a great bunch of guys!

Chaos Beyond CD Releaseshow @ ((szene))
Running Order: The Nothing, Savaria, Confessions Of Pain, Chaos Beyond
A great night of varying music all ended with Chaos Beyond putting on a great show to celebrate the release of their newest CD "The Drawing Board"!

Sick Of It All @ ((szene))
Running Order: Bury Your Dead, Sick Of It All
Seeing this absolute great of hardcore in action after all these years was just amazing. Bury Your Dead was fantastic as an opener and SOIA just destroyed the Vienna crowd!!

NOVA ROCK Festival, Nickelsdorf
It was hot, dusty, dirty and horrible. I still enjoyed it though! Loads of bands so I thought I would link to them and just show a couple of previews. Click on them to go to the full photoset.
Heathen @ Escape Metalcorner
Hadn't heard Heathen in a while and since Jon asked me to come along of course I jumped at the opportunity. Small, small, small stage. Miniscule. Still had space for me in the corner though!
Jon Dette
Met Jon as a result of his remembering my Anthrax pictures from last year. He's on tour with Heathen and asked whether I had time to drop by, which I was thrilled to do! Jon is a great guy and has some good stories to tell. Looking forward to seeing him again soon! Of course I took a few pictures of him. I had to. It's in my blood. Not sure if Jon has another photo face.
Evident Sin CD Releaseshow @ Aera Vienna
Running Order: The New Orphans, Jolly Buster, Evident Sin
Evident Sin put on a great show to celebrate the release of their first full length CD "Black Rainbow" (for which yours truly provided the photography) and I must say it was pretty damn good!

Tracer @ Backstage Munich
Running Order: Smoke The Sky, Tracer
I went to see my mates from Tracer as I do every time they tour in Europe and caught the first show of their El Pistolero tour. They have been rehearsing a lot and it really shows: the set was awesome and supertight, everything was just perfect. Their support was a local band called Smoke The Sky and I was impressed with their music as well, I now have a CD and have listened to it several times!

Eneera Releaseshow @ ((szene)) Vienna
Running Order: Thus I End, Prometheus, Harmanic, Eneera
Eneera presented their new CD "Personal Perception" and had quite a show prepared, including some great support acts - Prometheus being one of my favourites in the Austrian metal scene!

Discure @ Viper Room Vienna
RAW energy hit me like a fist when Discure took the stage! Wow!
This Amity Promo
Did a promoshoot with the boys from This Amity on a cold but sunny Spring day... we decided to use my garage for some of the pictures and then head out onto one of the Donaukanal bridges. We had a great time!
Wean Hean Wienerlied Cover Contest @ ((szene))
As part of the "wean hean" (ask someone from Vienna to help you pronounce it) festival all around the city, a cover contest for hip hop versions of old Vienna songs was held at ((szene)). I was asked to shoot it and wasn't sure what to expect but I must say it was pretty awesome. Each group performed 2 of their own songs and then their cover song. The lyrics were cool and really showed Viennese youth in touch with the city and also that the old songs hold true today as well - they capture a great timeless picture of the place I love to live in! The winner of the evening was Esref, a Turkish Austrian rapper who combines the cultures incredibly well! Full photoset here.
Seattle
Spent an afternoon around Seattle with Tom (thanks) and tested out the Canon EOS M I had on loan from Canon. I'm really impressed with the camera. I had a 22mm 2.0 lens on it which translates to about 35mm on the crop sensor. I had it on M all the time and it's quite easy to change the major settings quickly on the touchscreen. Yes, I sometimes missed having an optical viewfinder but for the size of the camera I felt quite comfortable without it. When attaching a larger lens and using manual focus (which I did the other night at Killswitch Engage), Live View is actually the way to go. The only thing that bothers me is holding the camera out at arm's length rather than hiding my face with it.
Killswitch Engage @ Arena
Running Order: Heartist, Sylosis, Killswitch Engage
Heartist and Sylosis really warmed up the crowd well for the awesome Killswitch Engage. They brought power and fun to Arena, joking and playing but mixing it with pure hardcore metal.

mesh @ ((szene))
Running Order: Sinestar, Torul, Mesh
Mesh really brought an excellent set which kept the audience captivated for 2 hours!

mesh Promo
Before their gig at ((szene)) I walked round the back with the guys from mesh to take a couple of quick promo shots.
Rock 'n' (Fem)Metal Night @ ((szene))
Running order: Jolly Buster, Siren's Cry, Evident Sin, Dropzity, Lolita KompleX
A pretty cool line up of bands who are all female-fronted brought a surprising amount of people in to ((szene)). The music quality was superb and I had quite a few surprises as pertains to new stuff for me to listen to!

Black Inhale @ Gasometer
As part of the Planet Festival Tour semifinals, Black Inhale had a "special guest" slot of 40 minutes right at the end which they filled with another awesome set! They certainly showed the up and coming band contest participants how it's done!
Beneath The Haze Promoshoot
A quick couple of shots around ((szene)) Wien with some great guys, they followed up on that day with an awesome gig!
Vienna Core Fest
Running order: Companion, Live Life, Born Again, Beneath The Haze, Unavoidable, Heaven Rise
A great evening of headcrunching brainmushing earsplitting hardcore of all kinds!

Chris
Chris was my history teacher for a while at school and left quite an impression on me due to his outside-the-box teaching. We've re-connected recently since he lives close and he needed to have some pics taken for his business, so I gladly took on the job! Being over 2m tall he was quite difficult to get into the frame in my limited space at home and I had to stand on a chair so that the shots could be taken at eye level!
Jesus Overdrive and Move! at Aera
A Back2Human event at the Aera - two bands that I found very interesting mixing it up for an enthusiastic crowd!
Austrian Metal Charity Bash
Running order: Companion, Uzziel, Catastrofear, Void Creation, Prometheus
The guys from the Austrian Metal crew set up this charity event in support of Stiftung Kindertraum which basically grants wishes to children who are sick with cancer or other (often terminal) diseases. As part of this I offered to shoot the show and also donated a shoot as a prize in the tombola. I am happy to say the evening was a success with more than 1000 Euros going to charity.

AGeh Wirklich? Promo
I had 30 minutes to do a quick shoot with Alex so we decided to meet before the Endiryah releaseshow. Not quite his type of music... anyway, he is super easy to work with, completely laid back and does his own thing with some fun results!
Endiryah Releaseshow @ Aera 02.03.2013
Running Order: Make My Day, The Greenriver Confession, Nothing Left, Endiryah
Endiryah have just brought out their new EP "Solar Eclipse" and celebrated this with a powerful gig of some of the finest hardcore! All of the bands pushed their limits and the relatively full Aera was very appreciative!

Archetype Apparel Photocorner and Fashion Show @ U4
Archetype Apparel sponsored last night's Addicted To Rock party at the U4 and I ran a photocorner for them. I also got some pics of the fashion show.
This Amity @ B72
Running Order: First Class College, A Screaming Symphony, This Amity
I was asked by This Amity to shoot this show as it was their last show with their lead singer. The venue is very small with LED lighting so a lot of flash was used. The first two bands I would describe as "rock pop". They were clearly talented musicians but it's not really my kind of music. This Amity was significantly heavier and I really enjoyed their set!

Holiday on the Maldives
10 days with the family on an island paradise - we had a great time!
Frostbite Vol.1
Running Order: Go! Go! Gorillo, Beneath The Haze, Psycho Village, Jolly Buster, Genuine Aspect
Not sure about the format of this evening. I was asked to shoot by Jolly Buster - Go! Go! and Beneath The Haze then also wanted pictures but the other two bands had arrangements of their own - their loss! Anyway, Go! Go! Gorillo was a real surprise, they played a fast rockabilly sort of set and were then followed by a real metalcore act in Beneath The Haze. Jolly Buster was really cool, basically hard rock which I haven't hear for a while!

Black Light Burns and Jayce Lewis @ ((szene)) Vienna
Wow. Best live show ever. No more to say.
Black Light Burns Promo
I love the music but didn't expect the nicest 4 guys ever - we did a quick couple of shots in the afternoon before their gig at ((szene)) Wien. Thanks go to Dylan Whiting for helping me out with this, not often he ends up as an assistant!
The 69 Eyes and Reverend Backflash @ Arena Vienna
I was asked to shoot the show by Reverend Backflash, who played an excellent set on what was unfortunately a very small stage setup. Self professed Helsinki Vampires, The 69 Eyes also put on a great show. The sound wasn't what it could be, but the crowd certainly enjoyed it! It was super tight with no photopit, so I retired to the soundboard after the 2nd song.
Set Your Scene on Fire @ ((szene)) Vienna
Running order: Night Falls Last, Unspoken Themes, Confessions of Pain, Leon's Massacre, Devoted to Your Monument
Another great night of Austrian Metalcore with a good mix of newbies and veterans!
Another great night of Austrian Metalcore with a good mix of newbies and veterans!
Dropkick Murphys @ Gasometer Vienna
Running order: Tommy Gun, Frank Turner, Dropkick Murphys
Opening the night were Tommy Gun: this local band really got the crowd going! Further warming up the crowd for the Dropkick Murphys, Frank Turner was really great - a band around him made for a rockier and faster set which clearly pleased the audience. Unfortunately Al Barr was sick for this one. No
matter, DKM blasted out a great set!

Scenario Fever Promoshoot
We had a good time at Flanagan's Irish Pub and then moved to a gallery which was perfect for a studio environment! Blasted by Rancid and the Dead Kennedys, we worked our way to some nice shots in a couple of hours.
Scenario Fever @ B72 13.01.2013
With their album release coming up and a promoshoot planned for later this week Scenario Fever still needed a few more live shots, so I head over the B72 (for the first time) to catch their 45 minute set there. Lighting was all LEDs and therefore quite horrible. I used flash on most pictures and have given them the once-over in Lightroom to get a more moody feel to them.
Graveitas and Legion of Bokor @ ((szene)) 11.01.2013
I was part of the jury at the Planet Festival Tour - a competition for Austrian bands which will culminate with big shows at the Gasometer and great prizes for the winners. As part of this I wasn't really shooting but since Legion of Bokor are friends I thought I'd take a couple of snaps. Graveitas had such a cool and different look I couldn't resist some shots there as well. I then put down the camera so that I could hold my beers.
Scenario Fever and Exit to Eden @ Aera 05.01.2013
For the first gig of 2013 I went to see some Goth/Punk and some Punk/Melody. Bit different from the heavier stuff I see a lot of but thouroughly enjoyable!
Favourite Live Music Pictures of 2012
It seems everyone is doing a 2012 roundup and since conformity is my middle name, here's mine. I chose the 8 pictures I like best, regardless of the feedback I have received on individual shots over the year. There's 8 of them because the forum posting rules at www.photography-on-the.net don't allow for more, so it seemed like as good a number as any.
